Short-Term English Language Programs

Students from around the world are drawn to respected short-term study opportunities at Canadian universities for their recognized results. Programs are designed to be collaborative and engaging and are delivered on o beautiful cities and campuses. Choose from one-semester language experiences which focus on either academic or applied English, or seasonal programs combining leadership, cultural immersion and language learning.

We are pleased to offer the following options  at Royal Roads University which is considered one of the world’s most beautiful campuses.

Option 1) Summer Leadership Academy

Summer Leadership Academy students will gain leadership skills while heightening English and intercultural competencies. Blending experiential and challenge-based learning, this program actively engages students to apply their learning to actionable projects in teams with the objective of making positive change in the world, both locally and globally. Designed for students 17+ years of age with moderate English language ability.

Program Intakes:

  • July 04, 2022 – July 29, 2022
  • August 01, 2022 – August 26, 2022

English Level Equivalency: Moderate: 5.0 IELTS, TOEIC 600,TOEFL iBT 60, ability to discuss topics and ideas in English

Duration: 4 Weeks | 20 hrs/week

Sample Program Schedule (subject to change):

  • Morning: ESL classes and on-campus learning activities
  • Afternoon: Leadership classes and off-campus cultural activities

Option 2) Applied English

Activate your English language skills and learn to apply them in real-world contexts! You will strengthen your overall language proficiency through an integrated skills curriculum and then focus on developing your ability to operate in the language in the applied life and career situations of your choice. Not only will you develop your overall English skills, but you will develop your confidence and ability to function effectively in the specific roles and situations that matter most to you.

The Integrated English Language Skills and Global Competency component will help you to improve your overall English language, academic and critical thinking skills through task-based learning, projects, presentations, and interactions. Choosing one of the applied options listed below will give you the opportunity to apply your language skills to a specific area of study and strengthen your ability to operate effectively in English in this chosen context.

This program is enhanced by experiential learning and guest speakers who can contribute firsthand knowledge from their area of expertise.

Applied English – Global Leadership

Develop the global mindset required to be a leader in an increasingly diverse world. This program will help you gain the skills, confidence, and awareness you need to connect with people across boundaries and to lead positive change in your life, organizations and communities.

Designed for aspiring leaders seeking an immersive international education experience, this one semester program blends professional and personal leadership, team-based projects and exposure to RRU’s award-winning Learning, Teaching and Research Model alongside an interactive and engaging integrated English language skills curriculum.

Applied English – Business Communication

Develop the necessary skills to communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors and customers in a global workforce. You will practice common types of business writing, learn useful expressions to use in a range of professional settings and gain a deeper understanding of how technology can improve business communication.

This intensive one-semester program focuses on the development of essential business communication skills alongside an integrated English language skills program. This program helps students establish a solid foundation in business communication and be taken on its own or as a steppingstone to Applied English – Global Leadership.

Option 3) English for Academic Purposes

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs are designed for students looking to develop their English language skills to help meet their personal, professional or academic goals.

Upcoming Start Dates:

English for Academic Purposes

This program offers 15, 20 or 25 hours per week of language instruction which focuses on speaking, reading, listening, grammar and writing.

Strengthen your overall language proficiency through an integrated-skills curriculum. Emphasis will be placed on building English skills through task-based learning, projects, presentations and interactions to move from language awareness to active use of English to achieve meaningful communication goals. The curriculum will encourage you to think more deeply about yourself and the world around you and empower you as a leader and decision maker!

The Semi-Intensive and Intensive options will allow you to further develop effective reading strategies and/or academic writing skills through an additional 5 or 10 hours of instruction per week.

University Academic Preparation

Challenge yourself to think, read and write critically within an academic context.

This program consists of a total of 20 hours per week of classroom contact hours. Seminar sessions are designed to further develop your academic communication, interpersonal, teamwork, problem-solving and research skills.

Expect to commit 10-15 hours per week outside of class to focus on assignments.
